The 2007 Urban Bocce Tournament will be held in September. Check
here for details and clear your calendars
now.
The New York City Urban Bocce Tournament is an annual event organized
by Tom Mason and the Urban Bocce Association.
Urban Bocce is a modern variation on bocce, the lawn-bowling game
traditionally favored by retirees and the physically disabled. While
urban bocce is played and scored using the same rules, it adapts
a wide variety of urban landscapes as its courts. In a Street-Fighter-like
rotation of turf and scenery, urban bocce tournaments require its
champions to play - and win - on an extreme range of terrains. Favoring
visually dramatic urban backdrops, tournament rounds can be staged
anywhere from traditional grass to sand, packed dirt, gravel, woodchips,
or even asphalt.
The New York City Urban Bocce Tournament's trophy, a handsome bronze
chalice with the names of previous champions etched into its sides,
is on permanent display for public view at the bar Floyd,
NY, at 131 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
This site is the headquarters for tournament information, photos, press quotes, and information on the phenomenon of urban bocce.
