The inaugural New York City Urban Bocce tournament, "A Test
of Wills,"
took place on September 25, 2004. The event was comprised of four
different rounds, each played on a different terrain, and on a
different island within New York City.
The tournament began on a small grass field on Roosevelt Island,
in
the east river between Manhattan and Queens. Play took place directly
under the Roosevelt Island tram lines, and was halted midway through
the round by a prickly police officer.
Round two took place on asurface of wood chips on the edge of Central
Park, a surface which proved to be unpredictable and difficult.
Round three was played on the packed dirt of a baseball diamond
in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, and the final round, a bracketed, NCAA
tournament-style affair, was played on the sand beach at Coney Island.
After an impressive run to the championship game by the lowest
seeded team (Blit Clister), Dan Busch and fiancee Tara Geraghty
(Alpha Underdogs) took home the championship and a winter's worth
of cocky pride.
