Urban Bocce 2005, Red Hook: The Ring of Fire! was played in three
locations around the Red Hook Peninsula.
In this, its second installment, the tournament grew like an aggressive
goiter, doubling in size (to 24 teams) in the span of just one year.
In Red Hook, athletes undertook the experiment of vertical bocce
by dropping shots off the back of a 10-foot set of bleachers, but
closed the tournament out in the traditional playoff grounds of
Coney Island. It was there that police officers gifted tournament
participants with both official citations and copious street cred;
a smug sense of subversiveness infected the group of near universal
former honor roll-types.
In the end, Dr. Strangeballs: Special Victims Unit pulled a shocker,
rallying from their position as #22 overall seed to win the tournament,
beating the hard luck two-time tournament runners up The Floundering
Fathers, and winning the right to have their names etched into history.
